# Product codes and tax settings

> What a product's code is used for, and how tax and accounting settings work.

Every product has a **Code** — this is FikaTrade's equivalent of a SKU (stock-keeping unit), and it's how you and your customers identify the product on orders and invoices.

## Codes must be unique

A product's code must be unique across your catalogue — FikaTrade won't let you save a second product with a code you're already using. There's no fixed format; use whatever scheme makes sense for your business.

## Units and pack sizes

FikaTrade doesn't currently have a separate concept of a unit of measure or pack size on a product. If you sell the same item in more than one size or pack (for example, a 250g bag and a 1kg bag of the same coffee), each is its own product with its own code, name and price — there's no way to represent them as variants of a single product.

## Tax setting

Each product has a **Tax** setting, drawn from FikaTrade's list of supported tax codes (for example, GST). This determines how tax is calculated and applied when the product is ordered.

Prices are entered **exclusive of GST** — the Base Price you set is the ex-GST amount, and GST is calculated and added on top at checkout, not included in the price you enter.

## Sales account

Each product can be mapped to a **Sales account**. This is used for accounting purposes — specifically, it affects how the product appears when invoices are synced to Xero. If you don't use Xero, you can leave this unset.

## What customers see

Customers see the product's name, image, description and calculated price (including GST) when browsing and ordering. They don't see your internal code, tax setting or sales account mapping directly, though the code typically appears on their order confirmation and invoice.
