# PayTo payments

> How PayTo agreements work, from setup to authorisation to reuse.

PayTo is a standing payment agreement that lets FikaTrade collect future invoice payments from a customer's bank account, once the customer has authorised it.

## Before you begin

Setting up a PayTo agreement requires a **supplier administrator**. Pausing or cancelling an existing agreement can be done by any team member on either side — yours or the customer's.

## Steps

1. Go to **Payment methods → PayTo** in your supplier workspace.
2. Create a new PayTo agreement, choosing the customer it's for.
3. FikaTrade sends the request to the customer's bank. The agreement starts in **Pending** status.
4. Your customer authorises the agreement in their own online banking app — this step happens outside FikaTrade. There's no in-app authorisation screen; FikaTrade only shows the resulting status once the customer's bank reports it back.
5. Once authorised, the agreement's status becomes **Active** and it can be used to collect payment on the customer's invoices.

## Agreement statuses

| Status | Meaning |
| --------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Pending | Sent to the customer's bank; awaiting the customer's authorisation in their banking app. |
| Active | Authorised and usable for collecting payments. |
| Paused | Temporarily disabled — can be resumed. |
| Cancelled | Permanently disabled by either party. Final. |
| Expired | No longer valid; the customer's bank has ended it. Final. |
| Rejected | The customer declined authorisation, or their bank rejected it. Final. |

## Reuse for future payments

An **Active** agreement is reused for every invoice you collect from that customer — it isn't a one-off authorisation. It stays usable until it's paused, cancelled or expires.

## If authorisation is declined or expires

A **Rejected** or **Expired** agreement can't be used, and FikaTrade doesn't automatically retry the authorisation or switch the customer to another payment method. You'll need to either send a new PayTo request or set the customer up with a [card](/supplier-guide/payments/card-payments) instead.

## What PayTo can't do

A PayTo agreement can't be created or used at checkout — a customer placing an order doesn't authorise a mandate as part of that flow. PayTo is set up separately, ahead of time, against a specific customer.
