# BECS Direct Debit

> How BECS Direct Debit works, who sets it up, and how it differs from PayTo and card.

<Note>
  **New 2026-10-07:** BECS Direct Debit is a third payment rail alongside [Card](/supplier-guide/payments/card-payments) and [PayTo](/supplier-guide/payments/payto-payments). It wasn't documented before this page.
</Note>

BECS Direct Debit lets FikaTrade collect future invoice payments directly from a customer's bank account, under a standing agreement the customer accepts themselves.

## How it's different from Card and PayTo

Card and PayTo are set up by **your** team, on the customer's behalf. Direct Debit is the opposite: the **customer** sets it up themselves, from their own FikaTrade login — there's nothing for your team to enter.

## Before you begin

Direct Debit has to be turned on for a customer before they can set it up. Any supplier team member can do this; it isn't admin-only.

## Turn Direct Debit on for a customer

1. Go to **Settings → Payment methods**. This list shows every customer and a switch for **Payments** (the master on/off) plus one switch per rail: **Card**, **PayTo** and **Direct Debit**.
2. Turn on **Direct Debit** for the customer (and make sure **Payments** itself is also on — a rail switch does nothing while the Payments master is off).

You can update several customers at once by selecting them and using the bulk **Update** action.

## What the customer does next

Once the rail is on, the customer goes to their own **Settings → Payment methods**, selects your business as the supplier, and chooses **BECS Direct Debit**. They:

1. Enter their BSB and account number (or choose a bank credential they've already saved with you).
2. Review the agreement — a Supplier–Customer agreement, Monoova's DDRSA, and a customer-specific Direct Debit Request, all shown together.
3. Accept it. That acceptance is the authority FikaTrade needs to collect — there's no separate mandate for you to create or send.

See [Payment methods](/customer-guide/payments/payment-methods) (customer guide) for the customer-facing side of this.

## Using it to collect payment

Once a customer has an active Direct Debit authority, it's available the same way a card or PayTo agreement is — see [How payments are collected](/supplier-guide/payments/how-payments-are-collected). It's reused for every future invoice until the customer cancels it.

## If a payment is dishonoured

A Direct Debit collection can come back **Dishonoured** from the customer's bank (distinct from a plain Failed/declined attempt) — for example, for insufficient funds. Treat it the same way as any other failed collection: see [Failed payments and retries](/supplier-guide/payments/failed-payments-and-retries). FikaTrade doesn't currently show dishonour reasons beyond this to suppliers.

## Cancelling

A customer can cancel their own Direct Debit authority from their Payment methods page at any time. A cancelled authority stays visible as a record but can't be collected against — the customer would need to set up a new one to resume paying this way.
